We have another one of our members with us today—Barry. Barry has kindly agreed to answer a couple of questions for me.

Barry, you come and train at Old Ironworks Gym. Why did you choose this gym?

“I chose this gym because it has the best equipment. I’ve trained in plenty of other gyms, and while they’ve always been okay, there was usually something lacking. Here, I find that the equipment covers everything I need. There’s nothing that I look for that isn’t here.”

So, you’re not just coming in here for general fitness. I believe bodybuilding is quite important to you. Could you share a little bit about that?

“Yes, I’ve trained in various ways over the years, and as I got older, I decided to focus on getting in shape and trying out bodybuilding. I fell in love with it. I’ve done a few competitions and even won a couple. Now that I’m getting older, I need to train to stay healthy, and that’s really the key thing for me.”

Could you maintain your current shape in a commercial gym?

“Probably not. I’ve tried training in commercial gyms, and no, I couldn’t. As a young person who has trained in commercial gyms and wants to take their training up a notch to get a better-looking body, my advice would be simple—change gyms. If a gym can’t provide what you need, there’s no point in going. If I were training for a marathon, there’s no sense in just running a hundred yards every day. You need the right equipment.”

When we came back out of lockdown, what did you think of the changes we’d made to the gym?

“I was very impressed. I think it’s probably the cleanest gym I’ve ever been in. Social distancing measures were well implemented, and all the members seemed to be very respectful of each other. Everyone puts their weights away and cleans the equipment once they’re finished. I’m very happy with the way it’s been managed.”

I always say that this is the friendliest gym around. Does everyone get along here?

“Yes, absolutely. There’s some great banter with a few of the guys—really good banter, as long as we stay two metres apart, of course! But seriously, it’s a lovely gym.”

Some people say this gym is just for men. Is that true?

“Not at all. There are plenty of women who train here. The bounce class is always popular, and it’s a very well-integrated space. Everyone is friendly.”
