Have a question?

If you are considering joining the gym it’s likely that you have many questions. Uncertainty regarding these questions is a common reason for people delaying joining a gym. Here we try to address some of the most common questions that we are asked.

How often should I work out?

Well, that really depends on your preference. When it comes to exercise, it’s important to consider your own schedule and lifestyle. How many days can you realistically commit to and enjoyably sustain a workout routine? Don’t forget to factor in time for family, friends, and work. By finding a balance that works for you, you’ll be able to maintain your exercise routine for the long-term and start seeing real results.

How long do I need to work out for?

Your current fitness levels, the type of training and the intensity all play a part in how long to exercise for. In general, the more intense the session, the shorter it can be.

What time of day should I exercise?

Whenever works best for you, the time of day you feel most energised. Some evidence suggests that training late afternoon (between 4 and 6pm) can provide optimal results due to fluctuations in hormones and temperature throughout the day. However, early risers may prefer to exercise first thing in the morning, while night owls might find it easier in the evening. It’s worth experimenting with different timings, as you may find that certain times work better depending on the time of year as well.

Is strength training or cardio better??

At Old Ironworks Gym, we believe in finding a balance in your training routine to keep things exciting and effective. That’s why we recommend a combination of strength training and cardio.

Strength training is not only a great calorie burner, but it also helps improve bone density, increases muscle mass, and promotes better posture. On the other hand, cardio works wonders for your heart health, lung function, and energy levels by keeping your heart rate elevated in the fat-burning zone throughout your workout.

Both strength training and cardio help you burn more calories each day, creating a caloric deficit that’s essential for losing body fat. And here’s a pro tip: if you incorporate circuit-style strength training, you’ll keep that heart rate up and burn even more calories!

So, if weight loss is your goal, your best bet is to do both strength training and cardio.

What to eat before and after a workout?

Before hitting the gym at Old Ironworks, make sure to finish your last big meal at least 2-3 hours beforehand. You don’t want any discomfort during your training session. Additionally, it’s a great habit to consume some simple carbohydrates about an hour before working out. Think of fresh or dried fruit, granola, or a cereal bar. These will give you the energy you need to power through your workout. After your workout, it’s important to rebuild and refuel. Opt for slower releasing carbohydrates like brown pasta, brown rice, and potatoes to replenish your muscle glycogen. Don’t forget to include protein in your post-workout meal, such as fish or chicken, beans, and pulses. These will help kickstart the muscle rebuilding process.

What are the gym quiet times?

Looking for a quieter workout session? Our busiest times are generally before work, midday, and after work. Outside of these peak times, you can enjoy a more serene and peaceful gym experience. Whether you prefer to exercise in the morning, afternoon, or evening, we’ve got you covered.

Are rest days important?

Rest days are imperative at Old Ironworks Gym because they provide your body with the essential opportunity to recover, repair, and rebuild.

To optimise your fitness routine, it is advisable to alternate between strength training and cardio workouts while incorporating rest days in between. For instance, you can engage in strength training on Mondays and Thursdays, cardio workouts on Tuesdays and Fridays, and have rest days on Wednesdays and over the weekend.

It is important to remember that even as you progress and enhance your fitness level, rest remains vital as strength is actually built during recovery periods, not during the workout.

Ultimately, the key objectives at Old Ironworks Gym are consistency and longevity, making rest days an integral part of achieving your goals.
